How old does something have to be before it is considered to be an antique?

  • Answer:

It depends on which side of the 'pond' you're on. For North America, it's considered antique if it's at least 50 years old (which doesn't make ME happy LOL!!!) IF we're talking Europe, it's 100 years old. Vintage is just 20-25 years old.

It seems that since I've been trying to liquidate my mother's estate, I've learned an antique is something that when YOU have it, it's a piece of worthless junk that the garbage man would be ashamed to be seen putting in his truck. However, as soon a DEALER acquires it, it becomes a rare and priceless relic worth thousands of dollars.

It depends on what we are talking about. For cars it would be around 25 years. For household items it could be in the 70 to 100 year old range.

20 years

20 years is considered "vintage" not antique. Antique furniture is considered antique at 100 years old. Antique houses are considered to be antique at 75 years, and cars are antique when they are over 25 years.
