How can you motivate an 18 yr old girl to get a job? She is bi polar so kicking her out is not an option, but she is done with high school, not in college and no job. She has no desire to be independent, does not want to drive, which is vital here.

I would suggest finding out what is important to her and focus on the accumulation of that. I mean, does she like music or clothes or jewelry or books? If she has something to work TOWARDS, it might be easier to motivate her. Offer to assist with a job search. If she doesn't feel she's ready for regular employment, maybe she could volunteer a day or two a week where she is needed and surely will be made to feel needed, whether that be a soup kitchen, a hospital, or reading to old folks at a nursing home. Good luck - bipolar requires an infinite amount of patience.

I would first say that "if" she takes medication then do the following... 1)Cut off her money supply. You must be giving her some. I dont know if there is an 18 yr old who doesnt want money or need it. 2) If she has a cell phone, tell her you arent paying for the bill anymore. I have been paying mine since I was 16. 3) No matter what she says or how important it is. DON'T LET HER BORROW ANY MONEY WHATSOEVER! Its important to stick to what you tell her and not give in. If you dont give in she'll take you seriously.

First of all she is no longer a child and you need to cut the umbilical cord already!! I'm not trying to be mean or come down on you but she is using her diagnosis as a crutch! This what my mom did to my brother. She didn't kick him out but when she left for work she made him get dressed and leave the house too minus the door key! And when she came home FROM WORK he could come home too. Being as he had nowhere to go he went and found a JOB! So I hope this is a starting point for you.
