Is there an adapter for the computer speakers?

Is it possible to transform mini laptop speakers into speakers for my mp3 player (Zen) without a computer? The speakers only have a USB cable, so is there such a thing as an adapter for them for getting AC power and/or plugging into phono?

  • Answer:

I guess it would be technically possible, but impractical. The speakers receive the audio signal in digital format (as well as power) over the USB link. If you wanted to run these speakers from an analogue audio source (i.e phono or headphone socket) you would have to have an intermediate box that digitized the audio into USB format (simplistic) as well as providing power for the speakers from a mains or battery adaptor, and I have never seen one of these. Since good quality analogue audio input PC speakers are so cheap, your best bet is to invest in a new set with a 3.5mm headphone input jack, which will work with many things. Check first though, that the player you have in mind does have a standard headphone socket - some only have a proprietary connector.

There are plenty of AC or DC to USB connectors (since so many things charge off USB now) but since the speakers use the USB BOTH for sound and power, I think you are out of luck.
