Where is the best place to stay in Spain?

Where is the best place to stay in spain?

  • Answer:

For me it would be well away from the tourist traps of the Costas. I went to Torrevieja a couple of years ago and I had been there for three days before I heard a single word of Spanish, it didn't seem as if I was in Spain apart from the weather.

Spain is a great country for visitors and tourists and I would take in 3 major locations if possible. Alicante on the coast is a good example of Spanish Riviera. Madrid or Toledo are great for historical purposes Barcelona is also on the coast but so metropolitan and has incredible Gaudi architecture.

I enjoyed Toledo the most. Nerja was lovely, right on the coast. Granada is absolutely fantastic as well. And Madrid, of course. Sevilla, Cordoba, Segovia, etc. The whole place is just wonderful. I hope to go back someday.

My grandfather was a travel agent, so he and my grandmother vacationed all over the world right up to his passing in the early ’90s. Grandma has always said that Jaén is the most beautiful place she’s ever seen. I, on the other hand, lived in Andalucía for two years. I was a full-time missionary, so I had virtually zero time for sightseeing, but everyplace I went was great. One *huge* suggestion: whatever time of the year you’re going, figure out what ferias and carnivales are going on at that time. That way, you can take in at least one of those! Some more specific suggestions for a trip to Andalucía: If you’re going in early spring, definitely see Sevilla: Semana Santa (the week leading up to Easter) is an incredible experience, and the feria takes over town during the third week of April. Málaga is a beautiful coastal province. It does have a few tourist traps, but the city proper has some great beaches that the tourists never see. Also, right around the corner from Calle Babel is a little sandwich shop called Los Tilos. Get a *campero*; they’re wonderful! If you want to completely avoid the non-native tourists, visit the quaint city of Huelva and its coastal pueblos. There’s very few real tourists around, but almost 50% of the residents head to their summer homes for the entire month of August. And don’t miss La Rábida, the monastery where Cristóbal Colón (Christopher Columbus to us dumb Americans) lived for 18 months. immediately preceding his first voyage to the new world. Granada and Córdoba each have some beautiful mountain trails, and if you visit el Alcazar de los Reyes Cristianos (in Córdoba), ask about another little sandwich shop that uses a sauce called “mala leche.” I don’t remember exactly where it is, but man, that stuff is good! Most of all, have fun! :-)

The whole country would be worth staying in. I know the north mostly, Santander, Bilbao, San Sebastian, they are all really lovely places with very nice beaches and coatline along the Atlantic Ocean.

Personally, I'd love to spend time in a place like Salamanca - 'La ciudad dorada'. It certainly has more character than Benidorm or Torremolinos and is much more authentic.
