Breeding Rabbit Basics?

I am thinking about breeding my rabbit. This will be her first time but I'm not sure if she will like the male because she doesn't know him. Will this matter? Also I would like a few tips on rabbit breeding like do's and don'ts. As this is our 1st time

  • Answer:

There are many things to consider before and after breeding your rabbit, one of the main things is that it could shorten your rabbit's life and health. It's not as easy as many people think. All sorts of things can happen and you do have to think about what will happen to the bunnies when you need to get rid of them. There is a huge population explosion of rabbits for pets in the USA and the rescue organizations have too many rabbits waiting for homes. Rabbits take a lot of time and are not low maintenance pets. It is best to have them spayed or neutered. That said, it doesn't matter if rabbits know each other at all. All you need to do is make sure both are in good physical shape and old enough (not old enough to breed, but physically old enough to care for a litter safely), not too fat or thin and each has their own cage. You always take the doe to the buck's cage, never the other way around. You place her in there for 5 minutes and they should mate. Then immediately remove her back to her cage. On the 28th day, place a nest box with hay in her cage. On the 30-31 day she should kindle (give birth). THat's the start. But please get a book on breeding rabbits so you will know exactly what to feed them and how to care for the young ones, when to wean them , etc.

i am sorry about the comment left earlier and the rabbits hould be just fine if you just keep an eye open for any fighting ir anything of that sort. its just that we have experienced this before and we ended up finding one of the rabbits dead so please still take my tips into consideration: . Always put the female in the male's cage beacuse the female is very terratorial whereas the male is not that bothered. . Don't breed brother and sister cos it can cause dead kits . You can breed mother and son and father and daughter . always put the nest-box in on the 28th day . Don't handle the babies when they are born . You should do something called palpating which is when you feel te doe's undersides for kits. ( they feel something like grapes or bigger) please give my ratings for this!

hi I just bred my rabbit and they didnt know each other either. But matbe you should introduce them with a fence between them first. the rabbits might fight, as sometimes they do not except each oter.when the rabbits are born. do NOT touch the babies until they are at least 1 week old. As this could make the mum eat them. Also, you may think that when your rabbit is pregnant you have to feed it extra. You do not. if you are feeding your rabbit the right amount already, you dont have to change the amount of food you give her.
