Okay, so I want a music downloading program but NOT LimeWire or BearShare - any suggestions?

I use limewire(new version) , Bit torrent/bt junkie, Piolet, Ares, frostwire ... I found to many problems with bearshare

Soulseek is magic for me. And there are torrents but OiNK died with my dreams.

I suggest using torrents. You won't find as many single songs, but you can find a good deal of entire collections there. What you will need is a torrent client (bittorrent is the classic) and a site that lists the different torrents out there (mininova.org, piratebay.org). It's not very "user friendly" but it's quite easy to get the hang of. Oh, and an added plus - the program (bittorrent) doesn't have any integrated spyware and is a cinch to get rid of.

I have had the best luck with Sancho/MLDonkey, though it is a little tricky to set up. eMule Plus is nearly as good and far more n00b-friendly. Some claim that there are nothing but virii and other malware there, but that is true of ANY network. If you have current AV software you should be safe and if not, then you're already massively infected just by web-surfing anyways so they won't make your system worse.

I use Frostwire, but it's basically just the same as Limewire. I've never had any problems with either.
