Do some people just need more sleep than others?

Is it normal for some people to need less sleep than others? i.e. Not sleep for 2 days at a time on a regular basis?

  • Answer:

I don't know about all sleep conditions but not sleeping for days at a time is a possible symptom of "bi-polar disorder", previously called "manic-depressive disorder". Those periods of being awake for two or more days are the "manic" phases of the condition. Since the human body needs sleep to be healthy, not sleeping at all for two days or more is not a healthy way to live one's life.

It's not normal as much as it does happen. I normally sleep in two to three hour chunks, then am up for eight to twelve hours. However, I've had many situations where I've needed to be awake and fully functional for two or three days. After being awake for that time, I will generally sleep for about four hours, wake up, and be ready to go. I can tell you that is not healthy overall. After a pattern like this for a few weeks, my body and brain will start shutting down, and I cannot function. I will then sleep for about 12+ hours solid. I try to avoid getting into these cycles. Expecially the older I get
