What French cities do you recommend to visit?

I'm thinking about going on vacation to the US, but I don't want to visit any big cities ... What small, quiet city/town would you recommend ? I'm thinking about Olympia, WA

See the mountains and the desert: Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Arizona are authentic Americana with beautiful small towns everywhere, and the option to avoid people altogether if you wish.

A nice place was Sugarcreek, OH. Amish land and a lot of nice history. Though, don't plan to spend more than a day there.
