Can someone explain foundation piecing in quilting. Is it just placing fabric on paper and stitching on the paper. What kind of paper? Thank you for your help! Have looked in my quilt books but no luck. Thanks again.

Answer:
The 'foundation' part of this technique is often paper, or sometimes muslin. You stitch the fabric to a foundation in order to make it easier to work with, and then strip the paper away after you are done. If you use muslin, you don't need to strip it off, but the overall weight of the quilt will be heavier.
