What is 'sound device' on a computer?

I have two compaq computers. I just installed (windows 98) onto my computer. After that my sound card stopped working. The sound card is built in to the motherboard. The BIOS said it was working. It's called Compaq Audio device ID: 0E11/000B. what to do?
