My friends works for a non-profit organization, but she still gets paid a nice salary. So how can they call it a non-profit organization? Where do they get there money from?

Answer:
They get their money from donors. Non-profit organizations are allowed to have paid staff members. Everyone is not expected to "volunteer" their time in a professional organization. True, more money could go to the cause without the overhead of paid staff, but without such people, fund-raising and other activities that bring in money would never happen. Thus they "earn their keep." This is a good reason why when donating to a charity, one should check the overhead expenses, and what percentage of your gift will actually go to those in need.

Donations and fundraising. The reason it is called non-profit is because they don't really sell anything. It doesn't mean they don't have money.

Non-profit doesn't mean non-money. They get money, even from selling things and doing services, but they aren't in it for profit. They do fundraisings and get money from donations.

If they are United States org you can always look up their tax return at guidestar.org and actually see where their money comes from. As for salaries, why is it an issue that the organization pays an appropriate salary, because it is a nonprofit? Nonprofit corporations should pay at the same rate that any other business does. They have an obligation to pay employees decent living wages that reflect the required degrees and experience to make the businesses operate efficiently. When you work for a nonprofit, you do not take a vow of poverty to be committed to a mission, sorry.
