Is hardware RAID worth it?

Is RAID worth getting if you’re not all that interested in backing up your data (at least with so other options available)? I seem to read every so often of people having problems with certain software and hardware because they have RAID.

  • Answer:

You don't use RAID because you want to backup your data. You use RAID to decrease the risk of 'losing' what live programs and data you have on your hard drive. What I mean by that is that RAID protects against hard drive failure by distributing data across multiple drives in a way that makes getting the data back possible if one drive fails. Even with RAID, backups are still necessary. I personally feel that RAID is overkill for the typical computer user. Making backups (or better yet - simple copies) of your irreplaceable files is not just a good idea, it's going to save a lot of grief someday.
