If I want to work with animals, what should I Major in?

I want to work with marine animals. Like actually work WITH them. What do I need to study and major in to be able to do this?

  • Answer:

... start with general biology and quickly branch into marine biology ... ... some bio-chemistry may help ... and familiarizing yourself with various database softwares will also help ... you may also want to go the long route and start with "pre-med" become a doctor, then a veterinarian, then specialize in marine animals ... ... although the above may help a prospective employer pick you over other applicants, it is quite possible to get to work with marine animals with very little training other than a hands on apprenticeship at a zoo or marine park ...

What kind of marine animals? For the most part it's been stated that a degree in biology with a specialization in marine biology is the way to go. If you want to work with marine mammals though, specifically whales and dolphins then it's a different story. First of all...join the crowd. There are so many people that want to get into this field that there aren't nearly enough jobs to go around. If you want to be competitive though, get a degree in biology and minor in psychology. I have a friend that did that and she got hired as a dolphin trainer at Sea World in Florida.
