What happened to "surnamesearchdaily" newsletter?

Stanford Physics Dept: A few years back they were working on a project to store data on a beam of light then quit sending out their newsletter. Anyone know what happened with that?

  • Answer:

I don't know about Stanford, but chances are your internet connection uses fiber-optics somewhere along the way between your PC and some remote server. Data (1s and 0s) are transmitted by pulses of light that can change faster ( = higher bandwidth) than electrons moving around in wires. Point-to-point communication by laser is not new. Do you know more about what was supposed to happen?
