Answer:
You can use both. You don't have to choose one or the other.

The airbag deploys at something like 200 MPH. If you're doing 50 mph and NOT wearing a seatbelt, then when your car hits an object you will continue to move forward into an airbag coming at you at 200 mph. That will not be a nice feel. For a millisecond, that airbag is solid. The airbag was meant to work IN TANDEM with the seatbelt. The seatbelt keeps you relatively stationary while the airbag absorbs the movement that the seatbelt couldn't. Cars today are built with crumple-zones. the front end of a car is built to be completely destroyed in a head on accident. It's job is to protect the passenger area of the car - same with the trunk. So, you are correct to say that the car will be completely damaged. That statement has NOTHING to do with you wearing or not wearing a seatbelt.

So do you plan on unbuckling once you reach high speeds? A seatbelt is always going to be more effective than nothing at all.

If you are going fast enough neither works. If the actual impact is at 50 mph, then you are probably dead either way. But very few impacts actually happen at that speed: people usually react and start braking before the impact, which actually takes place at less than 30mph. In that case, both will help, and both together will be even better. I think seatbelts probably provide better protection for impacts that are not head on, and better protection in lesser bumps. If I had to choose one, I would choose the seatbelt - but I can have both.

An air bag wont stop you flying thru the windscreen if you hit something at speed!

And air bag is a great secondary item (in head-ons) but if you leave the car through the window or roof, you are dead. Seatbelts save lives at all speeds.

Yes the seat belts work at high speeds. They are just there to stop you from flying through the windshield. I don't like airbags... My neighbor got in a small accident a while back and she was a little shook up but she wasn't hurt and her airbag went off and she got burns on her face because of the way the airbag worked and she had to wear a neck brace for a while all because of the airbag.
