Hang in there...it will take time. You may go home and feel terrible after school, but it is still early in the school year. Look to meet people in extracurricular activities and it doesn't have to be sports. Try a band or a club. Everyone is insecure in high school and you are not alone. The other people are just not trying to show how insecure they are. Just remember you are not alone. There are a lot of people looking to meet people and make friends just like you. Everyone has a talent and I'm sure you will find yours. Good luck.

Maybe rather than just walking up to someone and start talking to them, talk to people who you work with in your classes because you already have something in common with them--the class you are taking. Just be nice and pleasant and you'll get to know people.

If you want to be noticed and be popular, you have to join groups, clubs and participate in extra-curricular activities. YOU HAVE to be ACTIVE! The purpose of school: For you "to get your feet wet" by doing things you'll BE EXPECTED TO DO AFTER you graduate from school. DON'T sit in your seat being sorry for yourself. GET UP! PARTICIPATE! BE ACTIVE! GET NOTICED! When you want to "rub shoulders" with "the powers that be" (the folks who are affluent and have influence in your community), on a regular, dependable basis DO volunteer work at a local hospital, nursing home, museum, rehabilitation facility or worthy charity. Be nice. (I'm sure you are.) I remember highschool and everyone just seemed so mean all the time to each other. Smile are people. If you are a little shy or not sure how to start a conversation, sit by someone in class and ask them about an assignment, what it was, when its due, etc. Then you can maybe jokingly comment about how boring the class is or something else, to kinda keep it going. Always a good convo starter, sit by someone in class on a monday and ask them how their weekend was, or if they've seen a new movie that looks good because you've been wanting to see it but haven't heard any reviews about it.
