What should be done for general car maintenance?

My car (1997 Camaro) is at 105,000 miles. Everything's fine. I kept it very well maintained. I'm not really a "gearhead" though. What should I be thinking of doing for routine maintenance? And what's a waste of time/money to have done?

  • Answer:

You say well maintained, but do you have the owner manual/maintenance schedule provided with the car, and have you really followed it. If so, just do as it says. If not, at 105K miles it probably needs a long list of maintenance. Anyway, some very important things that are often neglected are: transmission fluid/filter change, radiator flush, change oil in rear end/differential, change fuel filter, brake fluid flush. Only thing I can think of not to do is have power steering fluid changed; I'm told this never needs to be done except when a car is water damaged/flooded.
