How much money do I need monthly to live in New York?

How much money, realistically, would I need to move to New York City or the surrounding area and live in a studio apartment while having enough to fall back on while searching for work? (Let's say 2 months worth of expenses.)

  • Answer:

Manhattan is extremely expensive -- I've seen studio apartments on the Upper East Side rent for $1500. But, depending on location, building, etc., you may be able to find a studio for around $1200+. In Brooklyn, you may be able to find a studio from $900. I'm only familiar with Brooklyn and Manhattan, but a lot of people are moving to Astoria because it is a short commute to the city and prices are comparable to Brooklyn. I don't know what utilities you'd have to pay or how much they would come out to monthly, though. Good luck!

in harlem you'll do something like $500-600/pm, but a bit of ghetto neighbourhood.... Utilities, groceries and stuff, probably looking at $1200-1500/pm, and if going towards a better neighborhood, say Jersey City or Queens, scarsdale..... probably like 2-2.5 grand a month, but you can always find some really cool and compatible room mates in this city...... good luck!!

a studio can run you atleast $900. and that's in the decent neighborhoods of broolyn, bronx and queens. anything better is higher. if its an apartment building, youre looking at paying electric and gas. in a smaller apt building, youre going to pay heat electric and water. plus you need to travel and a monthly unlimited metrocard is $81... so honestly? about $5000 for 2 months
