Why won't my Ipod charge when connected to the computer?

I connect the ipod to computer with usb cable and my comp. tells me it doesen't recognize device. on a friends comp. it charges no problem and she never had an ipod or one connected to her comp. what can i do to charge it from comp.

  There may be a number of problems here. Seeing as how you are getting a device unrecognised alert, you should first make sure you have installed all necessary software from the disc that came with the iPod. Newer iPods are shipped without a disc, and so instead you will have to download and install the drivers and iTunes from the Apple website. The documentation in the iPod packaging will tell you the web address to do these things. Hope that helps! :)
