What is appropriate for tipping at a hotel?

What's the deal with tipping? I am on a trip for my company and I needed to take a cab from the airport to the hotel. My company's policy is not to cover tips and I feel that I shouldn't have to tip the cab driver as I will not be able to recover those co

Well you don't have to tip. Though really, if your company is covering everything what is wrong with tipping a few dollars of your own money? Are you so cheap that if the company won't cover it, even though you're using the service, you don't want to pay? Are you not going to tip a good waitress cause the company won't cover it?

Don't be a cheap bastard. Just spring a couple of bucks for a tip. If you forget something in a cab and have to go back for it, you don't tip the driver... you are screwed. Karma is a bitch with sharp teeth sometimes.

You could always rent a car, take the bus, or even walk. Think of it this way -- you company doesn't pay for yur transportation while you're home, so no reason they should when you're away. If I ran a company, you'd get no food allowances, as you'd also have to eat if you were home.

Given that, I'd still tip something

Tipping is personal and should be based on performance. Since, your company doesn't cover it, you should tip if YOU feel the person went out of their way to provide service; if they made your experience easier on you. Their personal attention to your comforts deserves your attention. On the other hand, if they exerted the least possible effort to execute their job, they don't deserve a tip. On the third hand (I have three, most people don't, but I do), your company should pay for it!

I have driven cab, getting a tip is nice, but it isnt expected. the driver gets a bundle just from the fare price. getting your luggage to your room, you could do it yourself, you will probably want to tip the bell hop for helping you. if you cant afford to tip, you can tell the person your situation. a dollar shouldnt hurt your budget too much. or even a five. i think a five is the minimum tip these days.

that's ridiculous; your company should pay for tips. But, either way, its not the cab driver's fault, so i would tip.

I have had problems with the concept of tipping all of my life. I was taught that it was a way to express gratitude and approval of extraordinary service provided, but was never expected by the service provider. As a single mother with almost no income, I spent many years working very, very hard to provide the essentials to my children. Once in a great while I would manage to have enough to treat my children to a special meal or a special outing, but there was never enough extra for much tipping. It became such a nightmare for me to deal with the disaproval of others because I didn't tip as much as they did. I had to reduce, or stop any extras like that for my children. Now I refuse to tip unless it is for extra service. I pay the agreed charges for normal service. I will only tip for extra or extraordinary service.

Depends on where you live. There is not tipping here.

I'm sure your company would cover the entire cost of a bus fare, but since you want the fastest and easiest way you should just tip the cabbie, as the majority of the money he makes comes from said tips. My advice is to pay the tip and say thank you, basically if it was me I'd do my best to show some class, and tip generously.
