I want to get a GPS for hiking but don't know where to start. I like the feature that draws a line of where you have walked during the day. Also, can a hiking GPS be used to navigate in a car? Or would you need another device specific to road travel?

A car GPS would be too bulky for hiking. The eTrex was designed for hikers, but its basemap lacks the detail needed for car navigation unless a more detailed map is downloaded or installed, as some models will allow.

I have a similar problem. What I've found is this: 1) TomTom not that great for off road use 2) You'll want a 'mapping GPS' to show where you've been 3) AFAIK, all modern mapping GPS units come with a 'basemap' - a preloaded basic map of the continental US (or UK I suppose). 4)If you need topo maps or aerial pictures, you'll want a GPS with extra storage space. Look for one with a larger internal memory or an SD card slot. Be prepared to pay extra for Topo or aerial maps. 5)For driving, a hiking GPS will show roads and such, but will likely lack turn-by-turn navigation or any routing functions. The point-of-interest library may be geared more for hiking (ex: it may include parks, rivers, campgrounds, etc. but lack gas stations or restaurants). That being said, there are some crossover GPS units that are good for both, but big money. 6)You'll want at least a 12 channel unit so you dont lose signal in deep woods or canyons. A WAAS augmented unit is also much more accurate. 7)As a general guide, check out Garmin's eTrex series, Magellan's Triton series or DeLorme's EarthMate. Garmin seems to be the GPS of choice for backpackers, Magellan is OK, and DeLorme is pretty good but user interface is not. 8)Expect to pay from $150 to $600.

I was seeing today at tomtom.com where they have both hiking gps and regular gps for the car, built in one. A bit pricey.
