Demons like Samhain walked the earth, and people put treats outside their doors so that he would leave them in peace. If you had to go out, you wore a mask so as to confuse the evil spirits. Some kids started getting brave and went out in costumes, to steal treats from their neighbors doorsteps, and the rest is history.
