What do if I've been laid off?

Ive just been laid off for the first time, and dont know where to go from here, just need to know what im entitled to regarding lay off pay and how long can he keep me laid off

  • Answer:

Being laid off means your employment was terminated, although through no fault of your own. It most often occurs because of company downsizing in order to cut costs. What you should do now is start looking for a new job. You are not entitled to anything from your employer, unless of course, you have a contract that guarantees severance pay or some other benefit. Moreover, a lay off is a termination of your employment, so the employer is never obligated to rehire you. Every state does have an unemployment program designed to assist workers who were terminated through no fault of their own. If you have trouble finding work and need help making ends meat, your local unemployment office can assist you. With the economy as bad as it is, many employers are laying people off to avoid going out of business. Don't take it personally, and just start looking for a new job. Good luck!
