What is the work done by the force of gravity?

A 0.179 kg ball is thrown straight up from 1.94 m above the ground. Its initial vertical speed is 10.00 m/s. A short time later, it hits the ground. Calculate the total work done by the force of gravity during that time.

  • Answer:

Your force equation is correct, but your assumption that d = -1.94m is not. Gravity is only doing work in bringing the projectile downward. Find out how high the ball goes from your projectile motion equations. When it reaches its max height, that's your d. More importantly though, is gravity doing positive or negative work?

It won't let me type anymore :-P Basically, I know W = fd.. d = -1.94 since the displacement is downward I need help finding the force. I thought it would just be 9.8m/s2 * mass but I'm clearly missing something.
