What's the best thing you can give a homeless person? I have some money now and I want to give to the homeless people downtown. There's so many things I could think of to give. (Limit is $50 per person--the less it costs, the more ppl I can give to.)

Answer:
Donate to a soup kitchen. Those things saved my life more than once. Free hand outs of money are nice too, but be careful, some hobos blow it away on booze and drugs.

in my experience, charities are at best mismanaged and at worst total frauds, as for giving things to homeless people on the street, thats a good way to end up robbed or dead. the homeless are broken down into about 4 catigories 1. addicts: anything you give them will be sold for money to buy their drug of choice (crack, alcohol, pot, etc 2. crazies: paranoid schizophrenics, dementia, post traumatic stress, etc their just as likely to knife you as spit in your eye. 3. poor unfortunate quitters: they have lost everything, including the will to go on, their just subsisting and waiting to die, these are the ones who really need help but it's nearly impossible to tell them apart. people in this catigory either find a will and climb out or die in a gutter. 4.working hard at not working: these deadbeats usually have a home, often a steady income from disability, welfare settlements which they would loose if they had gainful employment, but they want some extra spending money so they go out looking as bad off as possible and ask people for money. now the best way I can think of to help any of these people without endangering your self, would be to support places that support them. i.e. soup kitchens, libraries (they provide daytime shelter to the homeless and a place to access the internet for job search and educational purposes), some local food pantries (do your research first, some help people but many help themselves and throw the unwanted dregs to the poor) something else you can do is buy sweat shirts, coats and such from thrift stores and leave them on park benches and other locations where the homeless will get them. if you absolutely have to give directly to the poor, you should try to form a group and do it in numbers (at least 8 to 10 people) this increases the amount of help you can offer while also increasing your safety.. one final thought "why are you really doing this?" are you doing this to make them happy are you doing it to salve your own guilt for being more well off? are you trying to actually improve someones life? if you just want to make them happy, give'em money for booze if you want to inprove their life, give them warm clothes and a shaving kit if your doing this for you, get help, this kind of thing won't fill that emptiness inside

I give them a flyer which contains: 1. Employment agencies. - 2. shelters. - 3. Food banks - 4. Addiction treatment places. They usually curse, throw it down and walk away.

A throw blanket and a new pair of warm gloves would be nice. Also something like beef jerky, and some soft candy like Reeses Peanut Butter cups. I believe that most homeless people drink booze to keep warm. Candy will give the body energy to do the same.

This may or may not help, but, whenever I drive past a homeless person with a sigh saying "homeless need help" or "some change please, hungry" we worry about what the money would really go for if we gave it to them, so, if we have time, we drive to the closest fast food change, buy enough food for two meals, go back and give that to them. Down side of this solution. Once, we gave the guy the food, he was very thankful. We were at a red light, so, we got to sit there and watch him cross from the median to the other side of the road where he set the bag down behind his shopping cart with about 3 or 4 other MickeyD bags that looked like they had just about two meals worth of food in them. jus' sayin'

Just to be plainly obvious here, they're there for 2 bad reasons of three, they're either alcoholics, druggies, or people who plainly lost everything, never give them cash because you never know what they'll do with it and don't kid yourself. A blanket and jacket to keep them warm in the cold months, and food just to keep them living.
