Had a sore back for a few days?

My employer is asking salaried employess to either take vacation days or not get paid for days that they wish to close the facility. If you do not have vacation days available you will not be paid for the 5 days days they wih to close. Is this

    unfortunately many companies are cutting back...and it hurts.These are benefits, so unless you are union they can do this....my advise is smile..and just be glad you still have a job..so many people dont

If I understand you correctly, this is actually illegal in most states. An employer can make a salaried employee take vacation if the missed work is the fault of the employee. However, if the employer chooses to shut down, then the employer still must pay your salary. This would not be the case if the closure is part of your normal work arrangement. For example, if the facility closes for two weeks every December, the employer could certainly avoid paying you for that period. However, if the employer makes a last minute or unscheduled closer, they are still on the hook.
