How do you know whether a chemical reaction is exothermic or endothermic?

Can you tell, by looking at a chemical equation, if a reaction will be endothermic or exothermic? For example, HCl + NaOH -> NaCl + H2O is exothermic but would you know this just from looking at the reactants and products, without doing calculations?

  • Answer:

no, to determine if a reaction will be endo or exothermic one need to look at a heats of reactions table and then do some dreaded math.

hmm I don't think so. You'd have to have prior familiarity with these reagents or their properties before hand if you want to predict something like this.
