How do we know you're not the one that has stolen the phone and want it unlocked for your purposes?

You unlock the phone the same way you lock it. Call your customer service department and inform them the phone was recovered. Also if your phone was locked and they didn't deactivate the SIM card I would be a little upset. An active SIM card would allow anyone to use your number and account to make calls.

Maybe the phone company permanently locked the phone? Couldn't hurt to call them to see if they can unlock it, and I'm sure they could.
