Can you figure this statement out?

My son had the math problem: Insert the parenthesis to make the statement true to the following math problem. He is in 4th grade. So far, 2 adults and 3 H.S. students who are great at math can't figure it out. 10-6+5/3+5=-30. Can you figure it?

  • Answer:

    1(0)(-6+5/3+5)=-3(0)

No, but I'm not in the 4th grade!

trouble... staying calm

I'll tell you why it cannot be done unless iwnit is right. The parentheses must be inserted in a position to eliminate the possibility of a fraction for the outcome. This cannot be done. 5 is not divisible by 3 -6+5 is not divisible by 3 10-6+ 5 = 9...this is divisible by 3 but it won't yield the right answer 5 is not divisible by 8 -6 and 5 is not divisible by 8 10, -6, and 5 is not divisible by 8 ------------------------------------ So there is only one possible way to put a set of parentheses in there to yield something other than a fraction...but you still do not get the solution you are looking for. This looks to be not a fourth grade math trick but a textbook misprint.
