What do you do when the previous owners break into your house?

I want a mini daschund with all my heart, My husband says that they are very hard headed and very hard to house break. Any daschund owners who care to comment?

  • Answer:

I have a short haired mini. dachshund and he's been great. he's just over a year old now and i couldn't be happier with him. i've taken him to pup school a few times but found that it was more for socialising him than training him. he is a fantastic guard dog and will stop barking as soon as i say so. he's very smoochy too, loves cuddles. almost as much as he loves his long walk everyday. i think i've been very lucky with frank though, he's been very easy to train and live with.

My parents had a daschund when I was 5 years old. I did not like it. Hardheaded indeed and barked all the time. They finally got rid of it and I was happy! Get a lab - best dog in the world! ha ha ha

They aren't any more difficult to train than other breeds if you know what you are doing. I got my long-haired doxy puppy to 1) stop chasing cars when they drove by, 2) let me know when he needed to go outside to do his business, including waking me up in the morning when I was slow to wake up, and 3) not get on the bed (this took scolding a few times but he finally caught on, and was so smart, he'd be on it at first when I wasn't home, then jump off when I came through the door. He knew he wasn't suppose to be on it, but that didn't last long. He never got on it after that. Don't yell at them, it won't help. It will do more harm than good. Be very stern in a low key voice, and stare him down for a minute or two while you talk. He'll likely be very still and know you aren't happy. They are very smart. I wanted him to sleep on my bed, but if they need a bath, which is most of the time, you will have dirt in your sheets if they have hair. If you want a clean dog that doesn't shed or dirty the bed, get a poodle. Or a smooth doxy might work. Doxies have TONS of personality, similar to a Papillon, but are low key most of the time, sort of like a couch potato. You might call them stubborn if you don't want them barking at strangers who come to the door, but once they recognize your friends the next time they come over, they will greet them with wagging tails, so stops pretty quick too. They are extremely loyal and protective. Mine had more bark volume in his vocal chords per ounce than any dog I've ever seen, but that didn't annoy me. As soon as I picked him up, or we went out on the porch to greet the person, he stopped barking and became friendly once he knew I was OK. I highly recommend them, but do NOT let them roam around outside with an unfenched yard. Do NOT let them out of your sight. I learned my lesson and will never do it again. I'd let mine out for awhile at night, thinking he was just sniffing around the front yard, and he was always standing there at the front door waiting patiently without barking for me to let him back in, then one night he wondered down the street (I didn't know he was doing this) and he got run over. Tore me up to no end. Prolly some bitch in heat he was smelling from three blocks away, causing him to wonder off. He was NOT neutered, which might have helped.

ha ha your husband is right...they are hard to housetrain, but once you have one you will be hooked..they are a wonderful pet,I have had 7..I would suggest puppy training right from the start with other puppy groups and never give an inch they will grab a mile and last of all jumping is not good for their backs,go for it a better pal you will never have and lots of laughs will be had..they are great..
