Not close enough to see his eyes, thankfully; but about 20 years ago I saw a black bear trotting through my yard about 12 feet from where I was. He wasn't actually looking at me. He just kind of went by and headed down to the river. I was so terrified I could barely move, LOL! I wouldn't go outside by myself for a long time, but I never saw him again.

I have seen a bear fairly close at the dump near where our cottage used to be when I was kid.

How about being trailed by a curious wolf in northern Quebec or a coyote while hiking in Ontario.

Yes, except the moose, though I've got dozens of them living inside the house, mostly stuffed :-) We still live with many bears around here, they've climbed the side of the house to get at the bird feeders and left cute nose prints on the doors LOL!!!
