I just started walking 45 mins a day and sometimes I get shin splints. Is there something I am supposed to do to stretch my shins before I start? I usually power walk but when my shins hurt thats almost impossible. What should I do about this?

All excellent answers so far, but, if I may, I'd like to add - Try walking on soft ground, as opposed to a road or side-walk. Check your shoes! Good luck!

Stretch them by gripping the edge of a stair or curb with your toes and lowering yourself until you feel the back of your calves stretch. You can stretch both legs at once or alternate them. This will help you.

There are a variety of reasons for this... Weight lack of use because there are muscles and tendons that can be aggravated very easily. The best thing or way to excercie is to use an oliptical machine... it allows you to work the legs and has less resistance and stress to the shins. I have the same problem sometimes with my shins but my doctor suggested using the oliptical and it has been amazing If you are not able to use a machine ... do not walk for such a long time at once.. take shorter and more frequent walks but do not power walk or place too much pressure on the shins.. if they begin to hurt return home and place cool cloths on your shins for about 5 to 10 minutes...

If you are going to power walk you need towarm up the legs before you do. Stretch and stretch the entire body for about 10 minutes, then do the walk and do not walk so hard as that is what is wrong with the shins.

shin splints are usually an indication that you are doing too much exercise, and the only way to let them heal is to rest. also, ice your shins and least once a day, and always after exercising (if you have shin splints - no need to ice when your legs are fine). you can go to a doctor to find out more info. they will probably tell you the same thing - take it easy a couple days and ice your legs. if you keep exercising, the shin splints will take a long time to go away. your doctor might also recommend you take ibuprofen or something like that. you can still exercise - try weightlifting, or low impact cardio like biking, the elliptical, or swimming. you can stretch your shins with a partner: sit with your legs in extended in front of you. your partner will put one hand on your ankle and the other on your foot near your toes. your partner will then gently (very gently!) push your toes down towards the ground. if you have shin splints, this will probably hurt, but it's a good stretch.
