Breeding Rabbit Basics?

Can you breed a lionhead rabbit and a dwarf rabbit? also at what age should a female rabbit stop breeding or should i say stop getting pregnant?

  • Answer:

Yes you can but you would only be diluting the breeding of both and making cross breed rabbits which there are too many of and they can't find homes for them. They are just 'rabbits', not either of the breeds. As to age, they shouldn't be bred before they are 6-7 months of age but they need to be bred before the doe turns 12-14 months of age as after that, most does are too fat internally and they aren't capable of being bred. As long as you are breeding a doe regularly and she doesn't gain that fat, she can be bred. I've bred some does into their 5th or 6th year. But if you stop breeding them and let them have a long enough rest, they might get fat and lose the ability to conceive. They ovulate but there is no fertilization possible.
