How is independence day celebrated in mexico today?

Do you know why Cinco de Mayo is celebrated? Hint: Everyone I ask seems to think it's Mexico's Independence Day and they're incorrect. I've also had the "it's a party day" reply often!

  • Answer:

Yes. It is not Independence day as you say but it is a date to commemorate "La batalla de Puebla" in 1862. (Battle of Puebla) in which an attempt to overthrow a Monarchy imposed by Napoleon III and headed by Maximilian of Austria took place. The battle was won but it wasn't until 1867 that Maximilian was finally overthrown.

Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for "fifth of May") is a regional holiday in Mexico, primarily celebrated in the state of Puebla, with some limited recognition in other parts of Mexico.[1][2] The holiday commemorates the Mexican army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of Mexican General Ignacio Zaragoza. For most Americans it's a "party day", thanks to American beer companies. However, for Mexican descendants its a commemorative day for a battle won against the French in 1862.
