I would like to learn web design. I already know the basics of HTML and PHP. What is the best way to proceed? Should I continue to try to teach myself through information on the internet? Or should I buy a certain book? Or should I take a class?

Answer:
I would say, do it both ways. A class, however outdated it may be, can teach you the basic foundation you need to know to really do anything. Books can teach you the tricks and gimmicks that you'll probably want to know, as well as some of the more advanced stuff. A class makes it easier, so for learning something entirely new, go with that, and supplement it with your own study. In general, if you teach yourself, you more fully understand it, though as opposed to a class, it takes longer and is generally harder.

There are many facets to working on the web, including graphics design, project management, programming, server and database administration, support, and QA. There are also specialties like Flash or other kinds of programs. The best way to learn is by doing, so start by putting up a website for yourself. This will eventually become your portfolio, and you will change it many times. Next volunteer to make or manage websites for some non-profits or friends or businesses that need them. You will learn much in the process, help others and be building your portfolio and references. At some point you will know what classes you need to take because you can't study enough about that on your own. Now you at least know where your interests are. The Internet is evolving so rapidly and new languages come out every few years, so everyone involved in it has to take classes at some time or another to keep up. Also join local clubs and/or email groups in the area of your specialty. You will learn a lot from them especially when you are stumped on a particular issue. They can make you look really smart. Remember to give back and help the people who helped you. After you've done all this for a while you should be well on your way to success in this industry. Good luck to you.
