Why is my xbox360 blinking red on the power on button?

How do i fix the 2 red rings on my xbox360? its on for only bout 3 sec. it shows up on the screen and starts to work then the fans get loader and it shuts off and shows 2 red rings. it cant be overheating cuz it turns off when i hit the power button.help

    this should work. mine got the 2 rings and then after about 3 minutes it became 3 rings. the problem is that it is over heating. first u need to go to radioshack and purchase Arctic Silver 5. It should cost $9.49. I did it to my own 360 and it doesn't over heat any more. what ever u do never use the towel trick.
