I studied them from a cognitive neuroscience perspective. The fovea (center) of the eye has a double blood supply, therefore its extra oxygen means is the last part of the visual field to go. This explains the "light in the dark tunnel" effect. As there is a loss of oxygen for any reason, everything goes dark except the center of the visual field. So much for the tunnel/doorway to God theory.
