Are criminals actually able to hide under cars (not trucks or vehicles with higher ground clearance) and wait for their victim to show up?

While I suspect one could actually manage to fit himself under your typical sedan style car (thinking Camry, Malibu, etc.), I doubt that would be a good idea. For one, it would take some work to get under there as its rather tight for your average sized person (particularly men). This argues against it being a viable solution as you'll have a difficult time getting out from under the vehicle as you did getting there to begin with, leaving the victim plenty of time to react by running away, macing you, shooting you, or simply getting in and driving over you.

I can't even get far enough under my car to find the jack points. I seriously doubt anyone short of a small child could do such a thing these days.

Perhaps it is an outdated concern, from a day when cars were boats with more room all around, including underneath.
