It's evolutionary----human beings' hands evolved to used objects and manipulate things with great dexterity. Here's an interesting tidbit----the index finger on most men is often shorter than their "ring finger". This is the result of males' exposure to testosterone in the womb, and having more testosterone than women. Women's index fingers, on the other hand, are usually roughly the SAME length as their ring fingers, because of much less influence from testosterone.
