How to organize a benefit?

Would society benefit if aethiests were to organize themselves in the same way that religions do? Pehaps then they could exert the same moral, ethical and political force that most churches feel they have the right to.

  • Answer:

the problem with your question is that atheists do not exist. I technically can't be a full time atheist, I am only an atheist by definition when comparing myself to a religious person. To consider myself an atheist by description of who I am in society and as a person like a religious person does stands in opposition of my belief that there is no god..I wouldn't meet someone and describe myself as a sports despiser, I either don't like sports and don't mention it or I am a sports fanatic and use that as a term to describe the type of person I am. People tend to want to think of atheists as Anti-religion. I don't believe in santa clause, I don't define myself as an anti-Clause, I'm just indifferent to the idea, I'm not going to rally against it even though I know he's imaginary. So technically atheists cannot be a group because we don't exist. We are merely individuals that disbelieve religion and believe that morality ethics and politics are man-made and the responsibility and concern of all equal free people, even those without gods.

I think it's kind of silly for people to unite under a lack of belief in something, and I think most atheists would agree.

It's difficult to herd cats. Probably not benefit. Most of us don't really mind how everyone else live their own lives, provided they don't impinge upon us.

Moongrim

Our only real uniting principle is that we don't believe in god(s), not much of a platform to run on.

HUNANISM.....Humanists are an organisation of largely atheists and agnostics who bring moral, ethical and political pressure to bare upon churches and governments. I am a member and atheist that is very proud to be involved. And yes....I believe society benefits from organisations such as this.

That sounds like organized religion.

They do and they are but we don't go around yelling about it and erecting monuments of stupidity and ignorance. We quietly go about our business mostly individually and try when we can to let people see the truth and enlighten them. When there is an opportunity to do so we try. We don't condemn those who don't agree with us, we don't say you'll burn in some made up place like hell. That mentality is a mean and cruel one. We pity the ignorant and hope that one day people will see the light, the light of truth, logic and a scientific way of thinking.

Uh, isn't that the current democrat party?

Atheism to me is having no religion and no belief in any higher power. I would not get involved with any organization especially to promote the non-existence of something because then I would be doing the same thing those damn Bible thumpers do: trying to convert people etc. I don't understand the point. But for those Atheists who just get together and shoot the shit and don't hurt anybody, I don't see the problem, but it just defeats the purpose for being an Atheist personally for me.

Uh... Isn't that the ACLU? I mean, they tend to force people to bend to their will, getting rid of crosses where they've existed for 70+ years because one man MIGHT go by it and see it; getting rid of the 10 Commandments in public places, on which many of the US' constitutional rights and laws were based; etc., all in opposition to the majority of Americans?
