What is Imogen Heap's song "Hide and Seek" about?

Do you like the song "Whatcha Say" by Jason Derulo better than Imogen Heap's original song Hide and Seek? (Hide and Seek was used in Derulo's chorus)

  • Answer:

Nope, I'm afraid Hide and Seek hasn't yet been surpassed by a remix for me. Although I made one with a Tupac a cappela that I quite like. :D

Although I think it is great that Imogen Heap's music is inspiring artists to create music, the Jason Derulo song is nowhere near as accomplished as the song it is borrowing from. It was a bold move on his part to feel that he could use such an original piece of music. He must have sprinkled a large dose of overconfidence on his cereals that morning. I have only been aware of the Imogen Heap song for a few weeks but already it will be a song that stays in my head until I die. In fact, I may even have it played at my funeral as the song has the ability to stop time. I can listen to this song and just imagine all life standing still. While I am still alive though, it makes my toes and fingers tingle with life. Imogen Heap made all the right decisions with this song. The use of the vocoder gives the song an ethereal feel and the lyrics are immensely poetic. Many interpretations exist which makes the song relevant to a wide audience and the meaning of the song may change depending on your situation in life. The song is truly multi-dimensional and the melody is incredibly eloquent and romantically charming. In stark contrast, the Jason Derulo song pales in comparison. First, the bloke inflates his ego by singing his own name! He does have a good voice but the effect that they put on it is nowhere near as committed as Imogen Heap's use of the vocoder. The effect on his voice is tinny in quality and they ruined the original Imogen Heap recording by speeding it up. It is pretty obvious what the song is about and a) how many songs have we heard like this? Bloke screws up...hmmm, b) How many songs have you heard like Hide and Seek and c) How many do you think we will hear in the future. My answers: a) too many b) one c) one So Imi gets 10 out of 10 for penning and fantastic song, creating an excellent melody, choosing a unique way to record it and she gets an extra point for pushing the musical envelope. So 11 out of 10. Jason gets 5 out of 10 for having a good voice but he loses a point for writing a song that we have heard too many times before and he loses 2 more points for having the audacity to sing his own name! He gains a point for choosing to use such a wonderful song but he loses it for not creating a wonderful song from it. So he ends up with 2 out of 10.
