Did i blow my speaker?

If 6x9's are overpowered to the point where they smell (burning) are they basically prmanantly damaged always? This goes for any speaker I guess. Because when you blow a speaker on purpose; it will keep working for quite a long time being way overdriven.

  • Answer:

The age of the speaker can be a big factor here. I would open it up and see if there is anything looks strange. A4 is right it could very well be the coils heating up. Check your wiring and make sure it gets sufficiant venting room.

Sometimes you will get that smell when speakers are new and the voice coil is getting warm. If that smell gets stronger or last a long time than yes the speaker is on it's way out. Gently push down on the speaker cone if you feel friction or it seizes inside side the voice coil the voice coil is damaged. you can also check to see if the ohms are correct with a ohm meter.
