What do Buddhist believe in and what do they want for themselves?

Why do people not like christians? if what they believe isnt true, but it makes them better people, and even helps criminals and drug addictis to be better people, what is the harm in letting them believe what they want?

  • Answer:

There are a myriad of reasons people don’t like Christians. Some justifiable & some not. There are historical reasons such as the Churches persecution of, well anyone who wasn't a white male, the Vatican’s response to the Holocaust etc. There are theological reasons, people of different faiths. & of course the oldest reason for hatred, fear. In response to your other point about Christianity helping people, well, as a mental health & addictions worker I can assure you it causes as many problems for people as it helps.

I'm not convinced that anyone is made a better person simply by merit of being a Christian. In fact, I would say that it makes them worse people. Anyone can indulge in some nice philanthropy, Christian or not. The only thing being a Christian does is give them an excuse to sit in judgment of others. Of course, anyone can do that too, but Christians are different from the rest in that they also claim that they don't judge, because Jesus said not to. I don't care if Christians want to believe a certain way, but they are definitely not better people for it.

Primarily because many Christians did not use their beliefs to become better people. They use their new-found religion to preach something they don't practice which makes them a hypocrite. Think of your view of Islam. It's most likely tainted by the few Al-Qaeda in relation to the many honest and well-meaning Muslims. Zealots and hypocrites will always speak loud than any group of true or honest believers. However, there is an exceptional case. This case is most readily found on places like YouTube. Here you can find people spending many hours attacking various belief systems, both Atheistic and Theistic, sometimes as viciously as possible. This is due to people nursing an inferiority complex. Depending on the case, many of them are unhappy with their life, their beliefs, or were raised in a household that causes them to rebel into their adult years. In short - they have a "crab mentality". It is a curious thing, but fishermen from many countries discovered over the years that, when fishing crabs, you do not need to cover their collection containers. You see, when one crab figures out how to get out the others will quickly grab him and, not only pull him back in, but they will drag him to the bottom of the container so he can't attempt to escape. Many of these people are down and unhappy and they see someone getting ahead. They're too ill-prepared to cope with such a thing so they immediately attack that person in an attempt to drag them down to their level. In these situations there's an easy way to defend yourself and your beliefs. It works well to figure out which ones are respectful commentators on your religion and which ones are going to be crabs about it. Just reply, when they say something of a nature that offends you - "I am sorry, but that offends my beliefs. We live in a very tolerant society and I wish to keep my well-informed beliefs to myself. I would appreciate if we could not speak of them." Those who continue to comment on them are not people you should choose to be around.

I live in a Baptist town and quite often large sweaty yelling men will tell me that I am going to Hell. People have experiences like this ALL the time. Ghandi said that to convince somebody that your way of life is right then you lead by example. The only thing needed to convert somebody to a way of live or of thinking is simply living that philosophy. When people experience the sort of stereotypical "angry Baptist" they start building an aversion to all Baptists and all Christians. I also want it to be known I have nothing against Baptists, there are just certain extremists in my life who happen to be Baptist.

I don't care at all that someone else believes in a Christian god, a god of any faith that they prefer. Feel free to worship the Flying Spaghetti Monster if you wish. What I don't like is when they try to force their beliefs down my throat. Just because you don't think birth control is acceptable, then don't force me not to be able to obtain it. It is entirely acceptable for a Christian to not allow homosexual marriages within their church. They can choose who they will agree to marry. But then to prevent anyone else from marrying, even outside their church, is stepping over the line. When missionaries trespass on our property, refusing to leave, attempting to convert others to their faith, then they cross the line. If Christians want to believe the world is only a few thousand years old (something that clearly flies in the face of all scientific evidence), then don't make up a pseudo-scientific "theory" called creationism that they will try to force my children to learn. If they want to brainwash their kids in their faith, then home-school them. When Christian thugs choose to kill an abortion provider, because they don't agree with abortion, then they are murderers. Abortion is a legally available option in this country. If you don't agree with a law, then there are legal means to change laws, IF you can gain agreement from enough other people. Use these means. That Christianity teaches people to be better people is a good thing, IF it makes them better people. But Christianity does not teach them tolerance for other beliefs. It tells its practitioners that it is ok to try to convert others to Christianity, that followers of other gods are bound for hell anyway, so when taken to an extreme, perhaps killing those heathen non-believers is alright. This is the single largest reason why I quit the church myself long ago.

Most people don't know a person is a christian until they start pushing their religion on others. Thus, outspoken idiots are what the general public comes to know christians as. There's really no way for those who aren't outspoken idiots to unsully the christian name, so you'll have to either live with how the idiots in your group make you look, or find a way to fix them.

The Wrong Answer

I don't dislike Christians. I dislike Christianity -- the religion that claims ONLY their god is a true god and all other religions are simply deceptions sent by a Devil - that was also created by their god and unleashed on earth with his permission - and their god sees fit to punish all mankind for two people's becoming deceived by the devil, created and unleashed by god himself. Do we see the issue here? Also, the consistently being told I'm going to hell for one thing or another is really annoying. And so is the ever-present pushing of their morals onto others and into political forums. And the whole "abortion is evil, adoption is great, but we're going to lobby to restrict certain people from adopting children because we don't like their lifestyle" thing. I could go on, but I'm not going to.

I think people don't hate ALL Christians or religious people.. just the ones that take what they believe and try to force it on other people who don't agree with their opinion. I'm not a religious person and I don't believe in any God, but your question says exactly what I DO like about Christians. Churches are usually safe places for people to be and a lot of the morals that Christians have are good and whatever keeps people being kind, generous people is a good thing in my opinion. You don't have to be religious to be a good, honest person.. but sometimes it takes a religion to get people to be that way.

Jesus told his disciples: Don't be surprised when the world is against you. If they hated me, they will most certainly hate you as well (paraphrased). Jesus also told his disciple to not be a part of the world. So the bigger issue would be when the world does NOT hate a "christian". Is he truly being a follower of Christ?
