I really like some of the shows on NBC, and I try to watch the shows on their website. They don't work in Canada, apparently. I have noticed this on other websites as well. What is it about Canada that we can't watch their TV shows?

Answer:
The rights to TV shows and movies are usually split up by country. A person who owns the rights in the US to something may not own the rights in Canada. Entertainment lawyers cost $200 to $1000+ an hour, so it is very expensive to clear the rights for something in multiple countries. NBC probably decided it is not worth it (for now at least) to get the rights for worldwide internet distribution, so it just limits itself to the US.
