Actually, the Indians did it (catch it) with canoes. they would bend the stalks over the sides of the canoe and shake or beat them. The rice would fall into the canoes and they would simply remove it from the bottom of the canoes. Though I suppose one could use a net, slingshot, or maybe even a used riceroni box.
