My sons father and i are having a debate about moths. As a child my granny said that one use for moth balls was to keep the moths from eating your clothes. Am i right on this one?

Answer:
Yes. They will eat holes in woolen items. The moth balls odor keeps/kept them away. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mothball . Maybe he's thinking of male moths' little tiny balls, and how hard it would be to SEE them, let alone USE them ;-)
