How do I keep my ear from getting infected?

Why do my ear piercings keep getting infected?

  • Why do my ear piercings keep getting infected? I have gone to Piercing Pagoda and gotten my cartilage pierced three times. All three times it has gotten infected. I have tried using 14k Gold, Surgical Steel, and Titanium. I have tried getting second holes as well and those both got infected. And I have had the first holes since I was 5 and even THOSE got infected when I switched earrings when I had gotten the second holes done. I'm not sure if it's infected or something else now. I get a bump around the post and it gets itchy and a bit crusty. What do I do? I really want my ears pierced.

  • Answer:

Go to a professional piercing shop. They use needles that actually take out a bit of your cartilage. Also they use hoops made of a special material called niobium that rarely people are allergic to. Tell them you want the niobium over the stainless steel. The hoops are really important as you can turn them to clean inside the piercing. The studs just trap bacteria behind them and the infection constantly resurfaces. For cleaning always wash your hand before you touch your piercing (no matter when you touch your piercing). Also use a product called bactine and nothing else like rubbing alcohol or peroxide. Those kill your white blood cells that heal your wounds.

you could be having a reaction to the metal in the earings.

I have a big problem with low quality jewelry my self so my experience has been that I have to shop around more for higher quality stuff.I would also rec-amend that if by chance you have the old earrings go have them tested and stick with the same gold or metal they are made with. Good luck on that.

My advice here is to go to a clinic or to a piercer and show them or explain it to them and they'll be able to tell you what the problem is, more or less. From my experience with piercings (I've had many), some people are just sensitive to foreign objects in their body. Some people's bodies will reject certain metals, kind of like an allergy but it's more of a sensitivity. If available, try getting pierced with medical plastic earrings. Those might be your answer. It's also VERY important to take good care of piercings when you get them. Playing with the, not cleaning them, getting them hooked on stuff will all contribute to the piercing getting rejected. You need to be careful with that, infections can get worse if you keep it up. Wait till the holes heal then try medical plastic earrings.

Wow that's f-in disgusting, please spare us the details and go to the doctors. Who will most likely tell you they have begun to rot and you need to amputate (you know what that means right?). Im sorry hun, just too drunk to resist the demon temptation. Seriously though go to a dermatologist and stop asking the internet.

It sounds very much like an allergy to me Are you sure the Gold earrings were real Gold and not plated?

You could be alergic to the metals, or try sterlizing the earings.
