What are some legit online colleges?

Are online colleges legit?

  • Answer:

On One Hand: There Are Accredited UniversitiesNearly 17,000 of the universities we find online are accredited, which means they have proven to academic boards that they provide a quality education experience to their students. They have professors certified in the subjects they teach, and have meaningful classes that will actually allow students to broaden their horizons. These colleges will usually offer the equivalent of what any traditional university offers, but you never have to leave home to achieve it.On the Other: Scams Are AbundantWith their own count nearing 17,000, scams are following closely on the heels of the legitimate colleges. Representatives of these universities claim you can get a degree with very little or no work, and they offer credits based on life experience. No real college gives credit for no work, so any offer that sounds like this means the "college" offering it is only interested in your money. A degree from this sort of an online university is pretty much useless in the real world.Bottom LineDo your research on any school you may be thinking of applying to. Just because it sounds like it's perfect for your busy schedule doesn't make it the right school for you. Just remember: You can't get something for nothing. The same rule applies to online colleges.Source:http://www.zcareer.com/articles/OnlineDegreesLegit.htmlOn One Hand: On the Other: Bottom Line

David Cameron, one half of the double act who are presently Prime Ministers of the UK want education to go in this direction with more 'red brick' institutions offering distance learning in order to save costs and to open up education to people who want their degree from particular universities but cannot, for one reason or another, live there. The Open University is a fantastic Brittish institution who have been offer distance learning for forty years. Their Humanities department is considered to be one of the best here in the UK. On a personal note, The Open University allows me to continue living in my village, miles from any University, and keep my job in order to gain my BA (then hopefully an MA). The courses are rigourous and time consuming, but very much worth the effort. Maybe there are similar educational establishments in other parts of the world?

Some of them are. Like anything else that you would invest your time and money into, you'll have to do your homework - not just doing a search online but also contacting them via phone or in person and asking them many questions to make sure it is the right one for you. I would start with universities near your home and seek other students that have taken online courses at the university.

It depends on the college. University of Phoenix is legitimate. However, I think that online learning isn't as good as being in the classroom. Not to mention that you can't have a lab online, so it would be no good for learning science.
