Why do eggs float by adding salt to water?

Do eggs float faster in sugar water or salt water?

  • Answer:

The reason that eggs float or sink in certain fluids such as water is based on their density. If the density of the egg is more than the density of the water it will sink. This can be adjusted by adding certain substances to plain water. One substance is sugar, which increases the density of the water but it is not more than the density of the egg so the egg appears to be suspended in the middle of the water. It will not sink all the way to the bottom. However, if a salt solution is used the egg will actually float on top of the water. This experiment can be done with two glasses filled with 200 milliliters of water and 50 milliliters of sugar and salt. Simply put the sugar in one glass and the salt in the other, stir until the dissolve and then place the eggs into the glasses.Source:http://www.elmhurst.edu/~chm/demos/index.html

Other answers

yes it is true that eggs float in sugar/salt water as compare to simple water because due the dissolve salt/sugar water's density becomes heavier than the egg so it force the egg to float on the surface :-)
