How do I get my iTunes playlists back?

How do I get my playlists to show on 2 computers when I run my iTunes library on an external hard drive?

  • I tried exporting a playlist on one computer and importing on the other but then I get the error message that not all the songs could be located. I do have music not purchased from iTunes but I changed to AAC format when importing into my library.

Further clarification, I am only trying to save my playlists on the external so I can use later and have identical playlists on both computers. Is there a file that is saved on my internal hard drive that I can copy?
